Man United can pounce on Edson Alvarez after Borussia Dortmund collapse

Just as it seemed that Edson Alvarez’s transfer from Ajax to Borussia Dortmund was about to be completed, the deal fell through at the last moment, creating an opportunity for other clubs to pursue the player.

Although personal terms had been agreed upon with the Mexican international, Borussia Dortmund’s new sporting director, Sebastien Kehl, decided to withdraw from negotiations due to Ajax’s demands.

According to De Telegraaf, Dortmund considered Ajax’s asking price of €40 million for Alvarez to be unreasonable and subsequently withdrew from negotiations, despite having agreed to a five-year contract with the player.

Borussia Dortmund, known for their careful financial management, will now explore cheaper alternatives, leaving the 25-year-old midfielder available for other clubs to pursue.

Chelsea, who had a €50 million offer for Alvarez rejected last summer, may reignite their interest in light of his failed move to Signal Iduna Park.

While the Blues could potentially make a renewed bid of up to €60 million to secure the deal this summer, the Mexican player is reportedly not convinced by the project at Stamford Bridge.

Despite having two years remaining on his contract with Ajax, Alvarez is not in a rush to leave the club. However, many believe this is an opportune moment for the Mexican midfielder to take his career to the next level after an impressive spell in the Eredivisie.

United manager Erik ten Hag played a significant role in Alvarez’s development during his successful tenure at Ajax. Ten Hag has demonstrated a tendency to reconnect with former players in the transfer market, as evidenced by the signings of Antony and Lisandro Martinez.

Alvarez offers different qualities and he could be a valuable addition for the Red Devils, who have shown limited interest in him thus far. The situation could change in the coming weeks, particularly if Fred or Scott McTominay were to leave Old Trafford.

Alvarez’s technical abilities, tactical acumen, and versatility would make him a valuable asset for United, especially considering the relatively reasonable price tag.
